How do I choose a kids' robotics or AI class in Sri Lanka?

Ask seven things before paying: who actually teaches the sessions and what they qualified in; whether classes are live or recorded; what the child builds in month one; total cost including any kit; class size; what happens when a project fails; and whether there is a free or refundable first session. A programme confident in its teaching answers all seven plainly.

1. Who teaches the class, not who runs it

Marketing tends to describe the institution. What decides whether your child learns anything is the person on the call every week. Ask directly: who teaches the sessions, and what did they study? An engineer teaching engineering is a different proposition from a coordinator delivering a licensed curriculum, and both exist in Sri Lanka.

This is checkable. A named instructor with a named degree from a named university can be verified in a few minutes; a claim about 'expert instructors' cannot.

2. Live or recorded

Recorded content is much cheaper to deliver and is often priced as though it were not. For children under 14 the difference is substantial, because most of the useful teaching happens when a child's specific wrong idea gets caught in the moment.

If the sessions are live, ask what happens when your child misses one. If the answer is a recording, that is reasonable. If there is no answer, the sessions may be less live than implied.

3. What gets built in the first month

A programme that knows what it is doing can tell you exactly what a child will have made four weeks in. Vagueness here is the single most reliable warning sign, because it usually means the first month is software tours and theory.

4. Total cost, including the kit

In Sri Lanka the course fee is frequently not the whole cost. Hardware kits, and occasionally software licences, can add more than the tuition. Ask for the total a family ends up paying over the full programme, and ask whether the kit is kept afterwards.

Ask about instalments too. A programme that allows them is not necessarily better, but a rigid demand for the full fee up front, before any teaching has happened, is worth a second look.

5. Class size

There is no universally right number, but there is a question worth asking: how many children are in a live session, and can a child ask a question during it? A live class of sixty is a broadcast. The answer also tells you whether anyone will notice if your child stops participating.

6. What happens when a project fails

Ask it exactly like that. The answer separates classes that teach engineering from classes that run demonstrations. Failure is the material in this subject; a programme that has not thought about how it handles a child's project not working has not thought about teaching.

7. Is there a free or refundable first session

This one is mostly about confidence. A programme that will let you see a real session before committing is one that expects the session to sell itself. It also lets you check the things no brochure answers: whether your child can follow the pace, whether the instructor is any good with children, and whether the technology actually works on your connection.

A note on online versus in person

For most of Sri Lanka the practical choice is not between online and in-person teaching of equal quality — it is between an online class and no specialist class within reasonable travel. Outside Colombo and a handful of larger towns, that is simply the situation.

Where both are genuinely available, the questions above matter far more than the format. A good live online class beats a mediocre local one, and the reverse is just as true.
